The first records of Ampleforth College Golf Club date from 1972 when Frank Amies, the then licensee at the Fairfax Arms, negotiated an arrangement with Ampleforth College for local people to use the college course at Gilling Castle. The nine-hole course had been constructed in 1960 by the college with the advice of the golf professional at Strensall.
The first president of the club was the Rev Leo Chamberlain (now headmaster of the College) who was responsible for arranging the maintenance of the course from the early 1960s.
The course underwent a major redevelopment programme in 2003 and the current layout offers a challenging, undulating course. It has a tendency to play longer than it appears, particularly the first and tenth which play uphill and generally into the wind. The course may be tough walking but is worth it for the glorious views of the North Yorkshire Moors.
