It has been rumoured that there must be something in the water in Northumberland, because in the last five or six years this northern part of England has developed into one of the most popular regions for golf in the United Kingdom. The locals famously prefer to call the area their own 'great discovery', and for good reason. Northumbria is alive with a sense of tradition, prestige and history and there aren't too many places that can boast such an appeal. It is, in a strange way, almost 'famous for being famous' when it comes to golf.
The area played a fundamental role in Britain's history and because of various protected areas, the Northumberland National Park for instance, much of the land has been left largely unspoilt. Indeed, whether you are walking one of its fine links or meandering through a rolling parkland course, Northumberland is a beautiful example of northern England in every respect.
The European Tour certainly isn't unaccustomed to stopping by on its varying international schedule, nor is the Seniors circuit, and it's easy to see why. Perhaps the best attribute to playing golf in Northumberland is the variety of courses you can enjoy. There are links by the dozen along the coast and award-winning parkland tracts further inland. This is, quite simply, one of the finest regions in England to enjoy your golf. And as an added bonus, it won't cost you a fortune for a few rounds!
