Clitheroe was formed in 1891. A huge step forward was taken when 96 acres of land were purchased for just £5,000 at Barrow Gardens in 1932, the generosity of the Southworth family also making possible the erection of a fine clubhouse building, as well as the establishment of a full 18-hole course rather than the nine-holes originally planned.
James Braid, famous golfer and prolific golf course architect, was engaged to design the course. In 1937 an exhibition match featuring the American Ryder Cup Captain Walter Hagen and local legend, Jimmy Rothwell, confirmed the status of the rapidly maturing course.
The present course is 6,326-yards long with a par of 71. The front nine follow the perimeter of the course clockwise while the second nine runs anticlockwise within the first nine.
