TEENAGER Tom Ford’s dedication to junior golf helped him scoop a top award from England Golf.
The 14-year-old, who is based in West Sussex and is junior captain at Selsey Golf Club, earned a Hero’s Handshake gong for his enthusiasm and hard work.
He was nominated after he made proposals to the committee to extend practice facilities, organised group tee times for juniors and encouraged his school friends to get involved in the sport.
He also organised the club’s first Junior Captain’s Day in ten years, raising £2,215 for the charity CancerWise.
“I was really pleased to receive the award,” he said.
“I try my best to develop the junior section and put in as much work as possible.”
Tom has no plans to stop his efforts and is aiming to change perceptions among teenagers that golf is boring.
Gordon Weller, the junior organiser at Selsey who nominated Tom, described the youngster as an “enthusiastic, welcoming and respected” golfer who had made a positive impression across the club.
The Hero’s Handshake award recognises young people who go the extra mile to make a difference at their golf clubs.
