Aileen Greenfield finally shrugged off the bridesmaid’s tag when she sealed a convincing 6&4 victory in the English Senior Women’s Championship at Hallamshire, Sheffield.
The Sussex player had been runner-up in not one, not two, but three national championships over the years and was in tears after defeating Cheshire’s Cath Rawthore to cross the winning line for the first time.
“I never really thought I would win,” said Greenfield, who is a member at Pyecombe Golf Club. “It’s just something you would dream of.”
She moved steadily through this championship, comfortably qualifying for the matchplay in 12th place. She showed her prowess by knocking out former champions Caroline Berry and Helen Lowe before defeating Staffordshire’s Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath) in the semi-finals. In the Over 60s, Ann Howard Trophy, Carol Wild, right, hit top form to defeat Yorkshire’s Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield) 7&6 in the final. Wild had just 12 putts on the outward nine to help set-up her victory.
