Tony Flanagan marked his comeback from major surgery in style as he was crowned Lancashire Seniors champion. Flanagan’s return to the golf course was impressive in itself as he required an operation on his back and had to endure intensive physiotherapy to be able to compete again. Despite his struggles, the man from Clitheroe claimed a comfortable three-shot win at Blackpool North Shore Golf Club to win the title for the first time.
“To be honest, I was a bit choked,” said Flanagan, as he discussed the backing he has got from his return from surgery. “I have received so much support from people.
“This was a championship I always felt I could win, but that doesn’t mean it was going to happen. So I am delighted to have come out on top of a high quality field.”
The win was largely down to his excellent one-under-par 70 in the opening round over the challenging seaside course, which allowed Flanagan to shoot 74 in his closing round to win by three shots. Runner-up and last year’s winner, Trevor Foster, paid a glowing tribute to his fellow rival but also his friend. “Golf is the greatest – and one of the reasons for that is the friendships you make,” said Foster, in tribute rife with class. “So I am not disappointed to be runner-up because I am chuffed for the man who has won.”
