CHILWORTH GOLF CENTRE is introducing a completely groundbreaking way of playing a round of golf that could shape the future of the sport worldwide.

The centre hopes to brand the new system with the name ‘9-90’, which is similar to the T20 format used in cricket, which has become a phenomenon in recent years.

In a special zone at the course, which is being branded as ‘Pace Golf’, players are encouraged to play nine holes of golf in 90 minutes, to suit the schedules of day-to-day life.

Chilworth was first formed in 1994 and is a parkland course, situated on the edge of Southampton.

Golf professional Dean Harrison is excited about the possibilities this new format will bring and the wider audience that it could attract.

“The ambition is for 9-90 to become a short hand term used by golfers everywhere like 20-20 is in cricket,” said Harrison. “And there’s no doubt the 20-20 game has had a huge impact on that game.

“With Pace Golf we are giving people the opportunity to play golf the way they want to. The 90-minute time frame is important: it’s the length of a game of football, a session at the gym or a game of tennis.

“So people can get their heads around the fact that they can enjoy golf in a timely fashion.”

The golf centre has allocated the back nine, which is par 32, of their course as the Pace Golf zone.

Crucially, golfers can pick one of three time zones: breakfast, lunch and early evening, which allows for players who prefer to play a full round of 18 to play undisturbed.

“We remain committed to the traditional game,” continued Harrison. “We simply want the great game of golf to appeal to a wider audience.

“Our research reveals something that we all recognise – that many people today are time poor – what with work, bringing up a family and other interests.

“One of our most important innovations is that we will allocate a tracker to each game so our marshals can monitor progress and ensure a smooth pace.”
