Bulgaria put Sofia on your next ‘must visit’ golf hotspot

BULGARIA Put Sofia on your next ‘must visit’ golf hotspotIt has been almost a decade since Bulgaria was placed on the European golf map. For sure, most avid golfers already know the coastal destination is a bit special thanks to Thracian Cliffs. But now, for the last couple of years – the Sofia destination in Bulgaria is going mainstream.

Without question, it is a great option for UK golfers to book a weekend break, very affordable accommodation in the capital downtown and excellent options for value-for-money food and drink. A pint of local lager in some of the small restaurants and bars (literally hundreds of them walking distance from hotels) will cost you roughly F 1. Dinner and drinks will set you back roughly F 10-15.

Paul McGinley did a great job when redesigning St. Sofia Golf Club, one of the oldest courses in the country. Five years later it remains an incredible test. In the same ballpark entertainment-wise is Pravets Golf Club, one of the many masterpieces of Peter Harradine. Pravets, incidentally, has hosted the EGAs of Europe finals for the last five years in a row, where the best club PGA pros from all over Europe competed for the grand trophy.

Low cost flights fly from eight UK airports to Sofia, including London (Stansted, Gatwick, Luton and Heathrow), Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow, Doncaster, Bristol, Manchester and Dublin.
