The best of the Bahamas

Get to know the incredible Abaco Club

By Chris Johnston

It has been described as the world’s first ‘tropical links’ and, going by these photos, it looks rather spectacular. This is The Abaco Club on Winding Bay in the Bahamas.

It already looks out of this world and yet its owners Southworth Golf - the same people who own Machrihanish Dunes - are set to invest $10million in a first phase of developments to improve this 500-acre piece of paradise.

The club has its own two-mile white-sand beach and what can only be described as truly incredible rental options for accommodation.

The golf course is best described as a ‘tropical links’ that’s a mix of both the Bahamas and Scotland.

“The Abaco Club offers the best of both worlds,” the website states, “a heralded Scottish-style links design set hard by the sea and a climate that’s ideal for enjoying the outdoors.”

The Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie design offers up classic pot bunkers, a rugged coastal border and huge sloping greens. It is routinely considered to be the No.1 course in the Bahamas. Throw in some kayaking, snorkeling, sailing and deep sea fishing and you’re in holiday heaven.

This is where European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke likes to chill out in his downtime.

“It’s a true championship layout - a links-style design - not unlike some of the ones I grew up playing around Ulster,” said Clarke. “The only difference is you can play this course in warm sunshine almost every day of the year! When the wind picks up, as it often does, every hole becomes a real challenge.”
