Gear Shorts :: Rickie hits it miles, Matsuyama’s mixed bag, PXG putters

Rickie Fowler

2016 | Tour Gear

What a week that was. Huge crowds. Late drama. Play-offs. AND did you see how far Rickie Fowler was hitting his driver?

As Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama were going punch for punch in a top class play-off, it was Fowler’s driving distances that were making headlines.

He may not be known as the longest hitter in the world but Fowler’s last five drives travelled 334, 321, 358, 344 and 320 yards respectively. That’s some big-hitting with his 9˚ Cobra King LTD driver, especially when you remember his average driving distance for the whole of 2016 was under 300 yards. Spent much time in the gym Rickie?

Hideki Matsuyama

Matsuyama’s mixed bag triumphs

He may be a Srixon staffer and have a bag full of Srixon gear but the new Phoenix Open champ has sneaked a few rogue clubs in there, too.

At the top end of the bag, he uses a TaylorMade RBZ Stage 2 3-wood (15˚) and a Honma Tour World TW727 Utility (19˚), while his nerveless performance on the greens came courtesy of a Scotty Cameron GSS Newport 2 Timeless.

It all came together nicely for talented 23-year-old and he claimed his second PGA Tour title in impressive fashion. Hat tip to Hideki.

 Danny Willett

XR 16 hits front with Willett

Danny Willett did his Ryder Cup chances no harm as he triumphed in what was a nail-biting finale at the Dubai Desert Classic.

The win was a big moment for Callaway because it was the first win for its new XR 16 driver, with Willett gaming a 10.5˚ model alongside XR 16 3- and 5-woods. Willett averaged 292 yards off the tee in 2015 and during his week at Dubai that average was up to 297 yards.

Who would complain if they were offered another five yards? Not us!

Horschel games new PXG putter

After enjoying a steady week, Billy Horschel revealed that he had a new putter in the bag for his final round, and it worked!

The American gamed a new PXG Mustang putter that is designed in a blade-style and it helped him gain 1.7 strokes on the field.

What did he think of it? He loved both the look & the roll, apparently.

Peter Hanson

Hanson joins ECCO

A key player in the Miracle at Medinah European Ryder Cup side, Peter Hanson has signed on the dotted line with Danish shoe brand ECCO.

Hanson joins the likes of Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Graeme McDowell and Thomas Bjorn in representing the brand and it appears he’ll be wearing the new ECCO Cage shoes.

After signing, Hanson said: “The new ECCO Cage design feels fantastically stable and delivers comfort form the first tee to the 18th green and beyond.”

And finally…

Justin Thomas didn’t enjoy the best of weeks at the Phoenix Open and he gave the guys in Titleist’s tour van a bit of extra work on Friday afternoon. Thomas snapped his Titleist MB Forged 8-iron in half after trying to play his ball out from under a tree and he didn’t look best pleased about it.  Check out the moment here:
