TITLEIST

Titleist have released their new 716 AP1 and AP2 irons, delivering best-in-class combination of distance, forgiveness and shot-stopping performance in player-preferred profiles.

The AP1 is Titleist’s longest and most forgiving iron ever, with an extreme 360-degree undercut cavity design that flexes more at impact. Constructed with high density tungsten in the toe of the long and mid irons, this creates a lower centre of gravity for a higher launch angle.

Stronger lofts, greater speed and even more distance is the result, while the weight is also moved to the edge allowing for increased moment of inertia (MOI). This forgiving design, with 50% more tungsten that the previous 714 generation, maximises heel and toe stability and increases the consistency on off-centre hits.

Meanwhile, the ‘gold standard in the tour-played iron category’, the AP2, has been improved with several PGA Tour stars, including 2015 major winners Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson, already adding them to their bags.

With high density tungsten again a main feature, creating a low centre of gravity for improved speed and distance, the weights are shaped using an advanced co-forging process pioneered for golf clubs by Titleist R&D.

“You can now get the look of a tour blade while still having the consistency and forgiveness of a forged cavity” – Jordan Spieth

The new AP2s have 25% more tungsten than the 714, allowing greater workability and shot control, while the MOI in the long irons is 8.5% higher than its predecessor and 5.5% over the full set.

“AP1 and AP2 irons are designed for two distinct player profiles,” said Chris McGinley, vice-president of Titleist golf club marketing. “AP1 is for players seeking maximum distance and forgiveness. AP2 is for players seeking distance and forgiveness in a tour-proven iron. Our R&D team has precisely engineered both models to create speed and launch for distance with maximum forgiveness to help all players improve their iron play.”

Speaking about the AP2, two-time major winner Spieth said: “The first time I looked down they looked even cleaner. I thought they looked almost like a blade. As an amateur, you can now get the look of a tour blade while still having the consistency and forgiveness of a forged cavity. For a true golf lover that can’t be beaten – and I’m really looking forward to getting dialed into my new set after the Presidents Cup.”
