TaylorMade unveils new RSi irons

TaylorMade RSi irons

• New iron families unveiled by TaylorMade.
• RSi 1 and RSi 2 designed to help manage mis-hits.
• TP version coming in January for better players.
• Talk about the clubs on Twitter: #mis-hitshappen.

TaylorMade is heading into the 2015 with a bang, with today’s official unveiling its new RSi1 and RSi2 irons aimed at helping you manage mis-hits.

TaylorMade’s research showed that 76% of all golf shots are mis-hits and it has installed a new technology into both sets of irons. The RSi1 and RSi2 have slots positioned at either side of face that work to mirror the performance benefits offered by the Speed Pocket, enlarging the sweet spot further and increasing the trampoline effect of the face. Found in the 3- to 7-irons in each set, they also frame the ball nicely at address and work well as an alignment aid. The new face slots, meanwhile are included in the 3- to 8-irons.

Let’s take a closer look at the new clue…

TaylorMade RSi 1 irons

The RSi1 irons are a direct replacement for the SpeedBlade irons released last year and have been described by TaylorMade as the fastest irons they’ve ever produced. They boast both the new face slots and the renowned Speed Pocket in order to give you as much forgiveness as possible across the widest area of the face.

TaylorMade RSi 2 irons

The RSi2 models are a new offering for people who would have played the brand’s SLDR or CB irons in the past. Described as the longest and most consistent players’ iron, TaylorMade says it has ‘the most technology anyone has ever put in an iron’. The set has been constructed with four different head varieties to help you get the most from your shots.

The 3-iron to 5-iron have a cast head and tungsten weight, while the 6- and 7-irons have a cast head for forgiveness. The 8-iron through to pitching wedge have a cast head and a forged face, with the SW and AW featuring a fully forged face.

What about the guys on tour?

A TP version of the RSi irons is on the way, combining the forged look and feel preferred by better players with Face Slot Technology. An advanced two-piece construction merges a premium 1025 forged carbon steel hosel/face with a 431 stainless steel back, using plasma welding in the 3- to 7-irons. This construction provides the precision and feel of a forged iron with the advanced geometry of cast irons – delivering the best of both worlds. The short irons (8-PW) are classic forged heads with a slight muscle cavity.

“We probably mis-hit the ball at least 30% of the time.” – Sergio Garcia

“The RSi TP irons were developed to deliver launch, consistency and feel to take performance to the next level for our tour professionals,” said Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade’s director of product creation for irons, putters and wedges. “The shapes of these irons will be instantly pleasing to better players and will have the feel and workability that golfers expect in a forged product. It really is the best combination of performance, look and feel that we’ve created for the world’s best players.”

Eliminating mis-hits is something that even the best in the world look for from their irons. Just ask Sergio Garcia.

“I would say that in a given round of golf, we probably mis-hit the ball at least 30% of the time,” said the Spaniard. “It’s difficult to hit the centre of the clubface every time. That’s why it’s important that the club you play helps those little mis-hits perform pretty much as well as your sweetspot hits.”

Australian ace Jason Day added: “We’re not all perfect. We mis-hit shots all the time, but they still go on the green. We’ve just honed our skills to make our mis-hits a little straighter.”

TaylorMade RSi1 and RSi2 irons: pricing and availability

The new RSi1 and RSi2 irons will be available from November 14, priced at £699 (RSi1) and £829 (RSi2). The RSi TP irons follow January 15, priced at £949.
