Upon a suggestion by his advisor Major K Crawley, Lord Boyne decided in 1923 to build a golf course upon the grounds of Brancepeth Castle Deer Park. Harry Colt was commissioned to design it and consequently the course which stands there now is one of the finest in Durham. Offering magnificent views and a fabulous backdrop, it measures 6300 yards over eighteen holes and its par 70 is a fine test for every level of golfer.
It plays host to the annual 36-hole stroke play amateur Championship for the Leonard Crawley Medal, and features a wide selection of tricky ravines which must be carefully considered if you are to score well.
