Golf in Murcia

This particular region of Spain has rather a lot going for it. It has a warm climate and boasts plenty hours of sunshine, striking scenery all around and has the beaches of the Costa Calida and Costa Blanca not too far away.

Murcia is the capital of the province with the same name and offers magnificent shopping opportunities, superb culture and diverse cuisine. The region also contains the happening holiday resort of Alicante if you fancy something a little more upbeat.

The royal and ancient game, however, is another great pull for visitors to this part of Spain and with a handful of courses, including some of Europe's most famous, it is a region that goes about its golfing business to a phenomenal degree of success.

La Manga, which lies between Murcia and Alicante, is certainly one of the world's great golfing resorts with three magnificent courses that are open all year.

The South Course was originally designed by Robert Putman and modified in 1992 by Arnold Palmer. A classic, long championship course that is located in the centre of the valley, it has been the venue for many major professional tournaments. The North Course has recently been refurbished to enhance the already superb championship course that requires accuracy rather than length of the tee. The greens have been rebuilt to USGA standards to compete with the finest courses in the world; the two tiered challenging fifth green being a typical example.

Although La Manga will garner much of your attention there are a few other hideouts that deserve special praise. Altorreal is just a short drive from the capital while the Torrepacheco course, a neat little nine-hole delight, is yet another that basks in scenic glory.
