Golf
in Corfu
Greece has not exactly taken the golfing world
by storm in the same vein as the Portugal and Spain but that, albeit a bit strangely,
is one of its major attractions. There is no sign of coach loads of visitors or
huge golfing societies waiting by the first tee. Golf in Greece is relatively
quite throughout the year and you are very much left to your own devices.
Greece
came late to golf because most of its courses, of which there are only a handful,
were built in the 1960s and 1970s. The tourist board now does everything it can
to encourage more people to come to Greece not just as a regular holiday destination
but as one for travelling golfers.
Corfu
is ideal throughout the year, as the sun beams down from March through to the
end of November. Yet if you don't fancy playing in baking heat just come during
the winter months where a thin jumper will suffice. The most famous course in
Greece is at Glyfada, built in 1962 and later remodelled by the world famous Robert
Trent Jones. Yet the island of Corfu has its own calling card in the shape of
the delightful Corfu Golf Club, the work of Swiss-based architect Donald Harradine.
The
course opened for play in 1971 and remains open all year round. It is known for
its beauty as it is situated in the stunning setting of the Ropa Valley. Colourful
olive trees and typical Greek countryside form the backdrop for your round while
the clubhouse takes care of your evening's entertainment.
So if you fancy
a week's holiday playing one of Europe's most surreal and beautiful courses while
lazing on quiet, sin-kissed beaches during the afternoon, Corfu is just the ticket. |
