Golf in the Dominican Republic

If you're a fan of Pete Dye-designed golf courses, then the Dominican Republic could be the place for you.

The well-known American architect has created no less than four courses on the Caribbean island and, just for good measure, his son, P B Dye, has designed one there, too.

All four of Dye Snr's courses are located at Casa de Campo, which is just 30 minutes from Cabarete. The best known of the quartet is called "Teeth of the Dog" and is reckoned to be one of Dye's top courses anywhere in the world.

Many of the holes are right on the ocean and it is definitely worth listening to what your caddie has to say when playing this spectacular layout.

The "Teeth of the Dog" was opened in 1971, since when the Links Course, the private La Romano Country Club and, most recently, Dye Fore have been added by Dye, who, incidentally, has a home in the resort.

His son's course at the Punta Cana Resort is well worth a visit, too. The layout is peppered with pot bunkers and offers spectacular views from start to finish.

About an hour from Cabarete is Playa Grande, which is often referred to as the "Peeble Beach of the Caribbean". Ten holes there run along the ocean cliffs and have stunning views of the sea.

Gary Player designed the challenging course at Guavaberry Country Club and another former Open champion, Jack Nicklaus, currently has no less than three courses under construction on the Caribbean island.

So, you can see exactly why the Dominican Republic has become such an extremely popular golf trip destination.
