Tree tunes up with a win

England’s Toby Tree will head into this weekend’s South African amateur championship in great form after winning on the developmental IGT Pro Tour.

The 19-year-old, from Worthing in Sussex, scored a wire-to-wire victory in the IGT Series event at Ruimsig Golf Club, near Johannesburg. He carded a final round 68 for a winning total of 13-under-par 203 and a two stroke victory over Northern Ireland’s John McClean

The previous week he led another IGT Series event for the first two rounds before being upstaged by top South African amateur Louis Taylor over the final 18 holes.

Tree decided to play the two events in preparation for the amateur championship at Hermanus after tying sixth at the South African stroke play.

“I wasn’t hitting the ball badly, but the game just felt a little disjointed,” he explained. “I decided to play the two IGT Series events, because I really needed to get something going if I wanted to challenge in Hermanus.”

He certainly found his form, with scores of 66, 69, 68 – and a final round which included six birdies and two drops

He heads to the amateur with his confidence high, telling the IGT Tour: “I hope to make it to the quarters or semis this year, but match play is so unpredictable. You can be in great form, but one bad round and you’re out.

“The last two weeks has definitely added to my confidence. The competition was stiff, the course set-up at both events was tough and it was a great way to get into shape. I’m definitely going down to the Cape with a strong game.”

Tree is an England international who trains with the England Golf men’s squad.
