AS the European and American Ryder Cup teams descended on Gleneagles for this year’s match, golfers at Churchill and Blakedown Golf Club staged their own version of golf’s greatest team event.
Based on Friday fourballs and Saturday singles, more than 70 members of the club joined battle in the red of Churchill or the blue of Blakedown, the two Worcestershire villages, near Kidderminster, which give the club its name.
The match resulted in a 24-18 victory for Team Churchill, led by club captain Peter Perry.
“This was a fantastic event, the first time we’ve done something like this and it won’t be the last,” said Perry. “The support from all quarters of the club was tremendous and it was wonderful so see so many golfers - male and female, young and old - joining in the fun.
“Every single match was cheered on the first tee by teammates who’d finished or were waiting to start. The atmosphere was unbelievable.”
