50-year-old Andrew to have hole named in his honour
Amateur golfer Andrew Walker is to have a hole named in his honour at Wath Golf Club after acing it three times in the last 12 months.
The talented player recorded his latest hole-in-one on the 248-yard par-4 sixth hole at the Rotherham club in June, and claims it is all down to luck.
Walker scored his first hole-in-one of the hole with a 22-degree rescue club, and followed it up a short time later with the same club.
The self-employed farmer, who plays off three, said: “It’s a risk and reward hole so it’s always worth having a punt at it – it must suit my eye.
“I’ve been playing golf seriously for about ten years. I played cricket for more than 30 years on the first team of my village, but was told I was too old. Since I had no interest in playing on the second team, someone suggested I take up golf, so I did.
“There are no secrets to getting a hole-in-one – just go for it. I seem to be doing well on the par-4 sixth at Wath but you can’t see the hole because of the trees so it’s risk and reward – you can play it safe or hit it blind.
“It’s always pure luck as I just hit and hope, although it’s getting a bit expensive now. I’ve got a competition coming up that rewards a hole-in-one with a car so it would be good to get one there.”
Despite not winning a car on this occasion, Walker did become a member of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club again, which has rewarded more than 5,500 golfers with a limited edition timepiece for scoring a hole-in-one during a club competition – but he is one of very few to have achieved the feat on a par-4.
Stephen Brydon, commercial director for MGS Distribution, the official licensed UK distributor for BOSS Watches, said: “Congratulations to Andrew on achieving golf’s Holy Grail of a hole-in-one. And, what’s more, achieving it on a par-4 – an amazing feat.
“To the majority of amateur golfers, recording a hole-in-one will be the most memorable thing they achieve in golf – a once-in-a-lifetime experience probably – and we want to ensure they have much better memories than merely a dent in their bank balance after buying drinks in the clubhouse.
“The exclusive BOSS watch is available only to golfers who record a hole-in-one. It will provide a constant reminder of the achievement and also help to ensure they’re never late for their tee-time again.”
