ENGLAND came close to regaining the European Senior Men’s Team Championships by finishing third at Estoril Golf Club in Portugal, writes Dave Hamilton.
After losing 3-2 to Germany in the semi-finals, England thrashed Italy in the third place match without losing a game.
New cap John Ambridge and Andrew Stracey won their foursomes match 2&1 against Cesare Castellini and Marco Bussinello, before English seniors champion Alan Squires got over the line quickly by beating Federico Lang 5&4.
There were also solid victories for the other new caps, Martin Galway and Tyrone Carter.
In the final match, Chris Reynolds played a halved game with Francesco Ghirardi.
In the semi-final against Germany, everything hinged on the top single which went to the 19th hole and saw Squires beaten by Kai Flint after England had won the foursomes followed by a single victory by Carter.
Earlier, England qualified top after the strokeplay rounds, with Ambridge leading the way with rounds of 68 and 66.
