ENGLAND’S oldest links has conferred an honorary membership upon eight-time major winner and current US Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson.
Royal North Devon - or Westward Ho! as it is historically known - bestowed the honour upon the American legend as it gears up to celebrate its 150th anniversary next year.
And Watson, who will lead the United States side in next year’s Ryder Cup match at Gleneagles, was only too happy to accept the invitation from the club.
Watson played Royal North Devon a couple of years ago and, during a recent press conference, named the club as the place he would most likely go for a quiet round of golf.
Accepting his life membership, he said: “It would be an honour and a privilege to accept your invitation to become a life member of your historic links; 150 years supporting the grandest game of all is quite a record. Congratulations!”
Watson’s honour coincided with the release of a limited number of international life memberships at the club. Just 20 of these are available, priced at $5,000, and will give overseas golfers the chance to be a part of Royal North Devon’s 150th birthday celebrations next year, which will see the club stage the World Hickory Championship as well as the English County Finals and many other celebratory events.
International life membership includes the following privileges: non-transferable life membership of Royal North Devon, with full playing rights; entitlement to use the club’s reciprocal arrangements with other clubs; full use of the clubhouse and its facilities; access to the club’s massive collection of golfing memorabilia; and a Royal North Devon golf sweater, or polo shirt, blazer badge, club tie and set of blazer buttons.
