UK to host three Senior Tour events this summer
BRITISH golf fans will be able to watch some of golf’s greatest names this summer when the European Senior Tour hosts three events on UK soil.
First, Royal Birkdale will stage its maiden Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex from July 25-28, with 2010 European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie making his debut after turning 50 in June.
Montgomerie will be joined by Tom Watson, winner of the Open Championship at the Southport links in 1983, and a host of other stars including defending champion Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Mark O’Meara, Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam.
The action then moves to the Home of Golf, when Fairmont St Andrews hosts the SSE Scottish Senior Open, from August 16-18.
Last year it was Swede Anders Forsbrand who captured the title by one stroke from Englishman Philip Golding, who carded back-to-back weekend rounds of 64.
Golding claimed his maiden Senior Tour title in the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open this June, and he will be one of a strong English contingent hoping to win on home soil in the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters, which takes place at Woburn Golf Club, from August 30 to September 1.
One of the longest running events on the Senior Tour schedule, the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters always attracts a strong field, with former Ryder Cup player Des Smyth of Ireland capturing the title last year for the second time in three years.
