Originally established in 1906 as a 9-hole course, Ravensworth golf club in Gateshead now offers eighteen fantastically challenging holes. Although quite short - it measures less than 6000 yards - the par of 69 indicates that a tough round awaits those who play this moorland/parkland course, and so it proves to be. The par three fifth is especially demanding. Your elevated tee shot plays over bushes and trees to a plateau green some distance below which is surrounded by five bunkers, so accuracy is essential. That is sometimes out of your hands, however, as there is quite often a prevailing westerly wind blowing across the tee from your left that catches many balls mid-flight and drags them away towards one of the waiting bunkers.
