Golf Breaks in CUMBRIA
COMPARED to some of the more famous regions for golf in England, it’s perhaps fair comment to say that the Cumbria area isn’t exactly ‘bursting at the seams’ with golf courses.
Nonetheless, what it lacks in numbers it most certainly makes up for in quality, variety and value for money. Make no mistake: Cumbria is a superb place to escape to with your clubs for some good golf and good times.
There are just over 30 golf courses in the Lake District region, with each and every one a different test to the next. To that end, deciding which ones to play can be a tricky proposition. But that’s where we come in.
One course that we have found is continually on the ‘must play’ agendas of visiting golfers is the sensational Windermere. Established in 1891, the course is situated in the heart of the Lake District with spectacular views over Windermere and the surrounding fells. The outlook is considered to match that from any golf course in the UK. Indeed, the course has even been referred to as a ‘miniature Gleneagles’ by many who have played it. Give it a bash for yourself and you’ll soon see why.
Another popular tract is the superb seaside links at Seascale. Dating back to 1893, this course has changed only slightly down the years and one of the most recurring comments from visitors is how much they enjoy the fact that the course looks so natural. So if that sounds up your alley, be sure to give it a go on a golfing break this year but, take it from us, you’ll underestimate it at your peril!
Further inland, parkland golf at its finest is the order of the day at Eskdale Golf Club near Ravenglass. Indeed, 18 holes of challenging golf set in the majestic Eskdale Valley await visitors to this secluded parkland course.
Stunning views attract golfers each year and combined with a layout that will test the most skilful player, Eskdale will provide a great game.
A quiet, relaxed feel is guaranteed in these surroundings and talk of the course will carry on long after the eighteenth hole is finished.
Likewise, memories of Dunnerholme Golf Course will linger long in the memory of all those who play it. Made up of ten holes, it offers fabulous panoramic views across the Duddon Estuary towards the Lake District’s mountains.
The signature hole is the par-3 sixth which is played to an elevated green on top of Dunnerholme Rock, a significant limestone outcrop from which the club takes its name. Expect a blind tee shot and one of the most challenging holes in the county.
Dunnerholme can perhaps best be summed up as a real gem with much to tickle the fancy of keen golfers of all pockets and persuasions.
Indeed, the same can be said for Cumbria itself. Trust us, this place is ideal if you’re after something new and invigorating so give it a go this year and see for yourself what all the fuss is about.
