English Golf Articles - Golf in Cornwall
Situated on the very southernmost point of mainland England, Cornwall is unlike any other region in the country. The county is, by all accounts, something of a tourist hotspot largely thanks to its warm climate and the fact that it enjoys great, sunny weather virtually all year round, earning it the nickname the ‘English Riviera’.
Its landscape is diverse and its history enchanting, with grand stories of bygone years told by its castles, archaeological sites and ancient towns. There’s no denying it’s a tourist haven and, with a splendid array of courses dotted around, there’s plenty
to interest golfers here, too.
Indeed, with its idyllic location on the south-west of England, Cornwall almost seems tailor-made for golf. Its rugged coastlines and lush countryside complement one another perfectly to create an almost perfect golfing environment. Cornwall is simply a treat for lovers of great golf. Whether you’re a fan of links or old parkland, Cornwall has some-thing for all pockets and persuasions.
Trethorne is unquestionably a course that everyone can enjoy. Situated just off the A30, it is flourishing under new management. The course has benefited from a winter drainage programme and exciting times are ahead with further plans for improvements. Scores return year on year for the Cornish warm - and value for money.
The course is a fabulous parkland challenge with mature trees, lakes and streams all through it making for a challenging round from the first tee to the 18th pin. At just over 6,400 yards in length, it is a fair distance without being too taxing for holiday golfers.
Another place you have to make time for is Trevose, situated on one of the most beautiful coastal stretches of North Cornwall, Constantine Bay. It offers three courses tailored to suit people of all abilities: an 18-hole champion-ship course, a nine-hole course and a short nine-holer.
The championship course was designed by Harry Colt of Muirfield, Pine Valley and Wentworth fame so that gives you some idea what kind of treats and tests await you at Trevose. With wide fairways and a links-like texture, it’s a formidable test of golf and an immensely enjoyable one at that. However, if it’s not to your liking there are the two other nine-hole courses for you to tackle. The ‘new’ nine-holer is still a great round of golf with plenty of challenges and hazards to overcome, whilst the ‘short’ course is ideal for beginners and those who are a little unsure of themselves on the course.
But these are just two of the many great courses in and around Cornwall and the only way to experience them properly is to go there and play them. Those who do will go home with fabulous memories from both on and off the golf course.
